How to Get your Groove
An introductory course to writing a book

Susan May Warren is an award-winning and best-selling author of three novels. She will go beyond the basic components of a great story - plot, characters, and theme to teach techniques that help a writer capture the heart and stir the soul of the reader. Learn how to hook your reader, layer your characters, and develop meaningful dialogue. Discover how to plot for the heart, mind, and soul.

 

Overview of Sessions:

Session One & Two:  One-Two-Cha-Cha-Cha Before you can swing to the music, you have to learn the basic steps of the dance.  The first two sessions will focus on three basic components to a good story:
Story Question/Theme, Plot, and Characters (Setting will be covered in Session Three). 

Class Three:  His hands are sweaty and that’s my toe
      In this session, we’ll cover the components to a good
scene:  The use of Scenes and Sequels in putting together a chapter, the elements of a scene, how to create riveting dialogue, using the five senses to evoke emotion, and the difference between showing vs.
telling.

Class Three: Twirl, throw and dip, and Would you like to dance?
      In this last class we’ll learn the secrets of a best-selling story, and how to edit your work into publication.  We’ll cover mechanics, pacing, characterization and offer examples on how to strengthen a scene versus simply re-arranging words.
Finally we’ll discuss ideas on how to carve out time to write, and be given hints and examples on how to craft their career.  This time will conclude with a Question and Answer session.
